Tim Burchett
U.S. Representative for Tennessee
Timothy Floyd Burchett was born in August 1964 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science degree.
Burchett began his political career in the Tennessee General Assembly, serving two terms in the state House, then three terms in the state Senate. He won election as mayor of Knox County in 2010 and was reelected to a second term.
Burchett ran for the U.S. House of Representatives to serve in the 2nd congressional district of Tennessee in 2018. He won the election and was sworn into office in January 2019. He is running for his fifth term in the November midterm election.
Burchett is married to Kelly, and they have one child. He is divorced from Allison. Burchett is a Presbyterian.

Representative Tim Burchett of Tennessee, the chair of the House Oversight Committee’s Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE), scheduled a hearing for Tuesday to investigate fraud allegations involving the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA). The subcommittee chair sent a letter requesting documents and communications related to contracting and grant-making by LAHSA, and called on Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass to testify at the hearing.
Chairman Burchett wrote, “The Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency is investigating potential waste, fraud, and abuse of federal grant funding intended to address homelessness. Specifically, the Subcommittee is concerned about the potential misallocation of federal dollars by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) to nonprofits in Los Angeles and the surrounding area.”
“Because Los Angeles officials have not adequately protected federal taxpayer dollars, it appears that many nonprofits to which those funds have been allocated are not using them for their intended purpose,“ the congressman continued. “To understand the extent of the problem and the steps being taken to safeguard federal funds, we request certain documents and information from [the mayor’s] office, and your testimony at a public hearing before the Subcommittee on September 15, 2026.”
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) reported that California has nearly 182,000 homeless people, with 73,000 in Los Angeles County and 45,000 of them in the City of Los Angeles. The HUD Inspector General is also investigating LAHSA’s use of federal funds due to evidence of “repeated false statements and its irresponsible actions and failures, including its lack of financial management, internal controls, and safeguards against conflicts of interest.” In June 2026, HUD suspended further federal funding to LAHSA until officials can show adequate safeguards are in place to protect taxpayer dollars.
